Rata and the Totara tree Rata was a youth who wanted to help his tribe.The village men couldn’t catch enough fish for the tribe,so Rata came up with a idea.He went to the forest and chopped down a tree to make a big canoe,so his tribe could take more in it and collect more fish.Rata came back to the forest the next day to work on his canoe but the tree was back on it’s roots.So Rata chopped and chipped again, then he went back home.The next morning when Rata went there,the tree was back on it’s roots.Rata was confused, so he chopped it down and hid behind a log.
